Brent Kessel has been investing for social and environmental impact since 1993. Brent, his wife Britta Bushnell, and their two sons are particularly focused on climate change, animal welfare, womens’ health, and poverty alleviation. They address these issues with their public equities and bonds, private equity, and strategic philanthropy that the whole family has been voting on since the boys were in their early teens. 96% of their investments are currently invested for impact.
Brent is the CEO of Abacus Wealth Partners, a founding B-corporation that prides itself on employing over 50% female advisors (in an industry where only 23% of professionals are female), as well as 60% female board members. In 2008, Abacus clients provided seed funding for the world’s first environmentally screened and globally diversified index funds. Since 2004, Abacus clients have been investors in the first and subsequent funds from managers who are now top decile performers (Elevar, SJF, TPG Rise among others). Brent also sits on the Investment Committee of Align Impact.
Brent and Britta teach workshops (both together and separately) on parenting, communication, intimacy after kids, behavioral finance and impact investing. Brent’s book, It’s Not About the Money (Harper Collins) was named one of Kiplinger’s Top Five Business Books of the Year, and Britta’s book, Transformed by Birth will be released by SoundsTrue in early 2020.
